The annual WA Born fashion show is this week and we are so excited to showcase some of Perth’s most impressive talent. Marlina Amy is showcasing as an exciting, emerging designer. Marlina makes high-end basics, that every girl would want. We get to chat with her about her upcoming collection and what she hopes for in the future.
Tell me about your Marlina Amy?
I started Marlina Amy because I wanted females to feel good about what they were wearing, being able to feel both comfortable and sexy. I try to create garments that can be layered and let the wearer determine their own sense of style, rather being told how to wear something.
What is the name of this season’s collection and what is the inspiration behind it?
The name of this season’s collection is “Lonely Girls”. The inspiration behind it is about trying to escape toxic people and situations in your life that control you and break you down, making you feel alone. It’s about finally trying to take control of your own life and be the person you want to be.
What are your top styling tips?
Dress for you and nobody else, wear what makes you feel good!!
What trends should be avoided?
Not so much trends, it is more about avoiding clothes that don’t work for you. Find the styles that complement your figure and accentuate your assets rather than dressing to fit a trend that doesn’t suit you.
When did you realise that you wanted to pursue a career in fashion?
My mother tells me I’ve been designing clothes since I could walk. So when I was 9 and told her I wanted to be a fashion designer, she said she already knew!
How did you go about starting your label?
I studied fashion at Tafe and learned the skills needed to create a collection. I kept going making collections based on what inspired me at the time until I was able to commit to designing becoming my full-time career.
What are your feelings toward fashion and its effects on wilderness preservation, and the reduction of humanity’s footprint on the environment?
This is something I feel very strongly about. Fashion has such a negative effect on the environment and humanity. Not many people understand how the massive demand for fast fashion is impacting the world around us. People need to realise that although things can now be so cheaply manufactured and at a high turnover, it is actually not good in the long term. Not only does the way the material is produced impact the environment, but the amount of clothing that is thrown away is rapidly rising and has a huge impact on our oceans and landfill. This is why I design pieces that are made locally and are a long-term investment rather than throw away fashion.
Why do you think a show like WA Born is important?
Not only is it a great way to support local fashion designers, but it is also important to raise awareness for the impact fashion has on the environment and wildlife.
What was the biggest thing you’ve learned since starting Marlina Amy?
Don’t give up, and don’t let the fear of what might happen hold you back. There are going to be people, yourself included, and things that hold you back or set back your goals, but you never know what you can achieve unless you try.
Who or what is your fashion inspiration?
With all the access to social media I’m constantly inspired by so many different things, be it movies, TV shows, music, celebrities, books, art or even an image that just inspires me. I draw a lot of my inspiration from emotions and events in my life.
What advice would you give aspiring designers?
Don’t give up! It can be hard, but stick to it and don’t let anyone undermine your ideas.
What is your motto or what motivates you?
Sleep and Coffee! Haha… I have a very supportive family who are always telling me how talented I am and push me to reach my goals.
What goals do you have for Marlina Amy in the next 12 months?
Selling on my own online store and seeing people wearing my clothes!
Where are you currently stocked/where can we buy your pieces?
At the Foxfeet Collective Store in Subiaco!!
What are you currently binge watching/listening to?
Haha okay at the moment I’m binge watching Law & Order SVU, I like to use it as back ground noise while I’m working on my label, and I’m listening I’m to Sza’s album, “ctrl” on repeat or sometimes in a playlist with other albums/songs I’m obsessed with.
What’s the most embarrassing thing on your playlist?
Please don’t laugh, but probably the soundtrack to the Swan Princess. I loved it as a kid!
What’s your current guilty pleasure?
Hmm, I’m not too sure… I guess I like to try and fit in a run a few times a week, it really helps relieve stress and refocus my thoughts. Nothing exciting at this point in time.
