Designer Profile: TJ the Label

The annual WA Born fashion show is just around the corner and we are so excited to showcase some of Perth’s most impressive talent. TJ the Label is showcasing as an exciting, emerging designer. We get to chat with her about her upcoming collection and what she hopes for in the future.

Tell me about TJ the Label?

TJ the Label is an Australian affordable luxury label for men and women whose aesthetic is underscored by technical detailing, uncomplicated styling and focuses on comfort, functionality, and indulgence. A contemporary lifestyle brand that transforms day to night. Our highest value is producing affordable garments that focus on equality between men and women with equal pricing, similar features and fabrics.

Our collections are tailored toward an active lifestyle and someone who appreciates quality over quantity. We want to provide our customers with a garment experience that honours their lifestyle. We focus on neutral tones, strong silhouettes and defined details that can be worn season after season, adding colour through prints exclusively designed and are inspired by nature and natural phenomena’s around the world.

What is the name of this season’s collection and what is the inspiration behind it?

As well as showcasing some of our Aurora Collection which is inspired by the Northern Lights, we will also be debuting our new summer pieces in our Midnight Sun collection which has an exclusive print inspired by this natural phenomenon of the ‘Midnight Sun’. This collection has easy to layer pieces with strong silhouettes in luxurious fabrics.

What are your top styling tips?

I would say always be comfortable in what you are wearing that way you feel more confident.

What trends should be avoided?

All trends come back around eventually, but being comfortable and yourself is important, you don’t always have the follow the trends.

When did you realise that you wanted to pursue a career in fashion?

I always had an interest in fashion when I was young I would alter and create new clothes, even though they weren’t made correctly or any good. I just loved being creative, and that aspect of making something from start to finish felt amazing. It’s a course I have always wanted to do.

How did you go about starting TJ the Label?

TJ the Label was launched this year after graduating from TAFE, I was determined to launch and grow my brand and it has been a progression to build up to that release, but having the support around me has definitely helped.

What are your feeling towards fashion and its effects on wilderness preservation, and the reduction of humanity’s footprint on the environment?

The fashion industry is definitely always going to be around, but understanding it better for the consumers and designers is a priority. The fashion industry is one of the biggest polluters to the environment, whether you’re a small business or large I think it’s important to try and help reduce this impact where you can.

Why do you think a show like WA Born is important?

WA Born is a great platform for WA labels to try and create a name for themselves. The hardest part about creating a label/business is getting the exposure and having a runway that can help you reach a different audience is great.

What was the biggest thing you’ve learned since starting TJ the Label?

That determination and patience are key. Nothing is going to happen overnight unless you’re extremely lucky, in an industry like fashion you need to really have the drive to keep going while staying true to yourself and your brand.

Who or what is your fashion muse/inspiration?

My inspiration comes from nature and natural phenomena’s around the world. These help me create my unique and exclusive prints

What advice would you give aspiring designers?

Be yourself, it’s easy to try and copy other people but being unique is really what is going to help you stand out. And be determined – it is such a tough industry you really need to want to do it.

What is your motto or what motivates you?

The support that I have around me starting this label has really motivated and kept me going when things get tough and stressful.

What goals do you have for TJ the Label in the next 12 months?

I would like TJ the Label to have some in Perth and to be shipping worldwide on our online store, as well as having more of a following on social media to get out name out there.

Where are you currently stocked/where can we buy your pieces?

Sparrow and Jack Boutique
Glengarry Shopping Centre

What are you currently binge watching/listening to?

Any tv shows on Netflix.

What’s the most embarrassing thing on your playlist?

Definitely High School Musical Songs.
